Position Title: Technician Physio-Chemical
Department: Water Quality
Reporting to: Head Water Quality
Location: Jinja
Salary Scale: UR6
Overall Purpose
Provide technical support to research scientists undertaking studies on physico-chemical environment in water bodies, develop and maintain database for both capture fisheries and aquaculture research.
Terms of Reference
- Plan and undertake field and laboratory work to collect and analyze data on the physico-chemical parameters that influence aquatic productivity.
- Applying advanced analytical techniques and modifications in laboratory.
- Fix and calibrate equipment used both in the lab and in the field.
- Preserve and maintain samples in the laboratory.
- Fabricate field and laboratory tools and equipment
- Develop and maintain experimental tools and equipments used in collecting samples.
- Determine physico-chemical parameters in lake water (e.g Dissolved oxygen, PH, conductivity etc)
- Collecting sediment and water samples for determination of pollutants, heavy metals and nutrients levels.
- Analyse and generate data from water samples collected for nutrients e.g Total Phosphorus, Total Nitrogen, Soluble Reactive Phosphorus, etc.
- Take readings for wind movement, solar, rainfall, turbidity and humidity.
- Carry out data entry and analysis to generate scientific reports.
- Maintain general laboratory organisation and cleanness.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ordinary Diploma in Science Technology (Chemistry)
Minimum of four years’ relevant working experience gained from a reputable institution.
Key Competencies
- Demonstrated ability in the use of appropriate software including Ms Office.
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to undertake field based data collection for extended periods of time.
- Ability to execute safety precautions to minimize occupational hazards.
- Knowledge of ionic chemistry, principles and practical applications.
- Ability to use computerized instruments and equipments.
- Ability to work for long hours under minimum supervision.
