Position Title: Fish Biology Technician
Department:              Fish Biology
Reporting to:             Head Fish Biology
Location:                    Jinja
Salary Scale:              UR6

Overall Purpose

Provide technical support to research scientists undertaking research on fish biology and ecology, develop and maintain databases for both aquaculture and capture fisheries research.

Terms of Reference

  • Prepare work plans for field sampling activities and data collection on the Biology and Ecology species including haplochromines.
  • Prepare equipment for field sampling and data collection.
  • Use existing identification keys and other emerging techniques to identify major fish taxa.
  • Generate data on the biological and ecological parameters of key fish species.
  • Collect and preserve fish part samples for further analysis.
  • Analyse collected samples/data and produce preliminary results/reports.
  • Participate in Agricultural Research Review/Planning and dissemination events.
  • Organize and maintain laboratory equipment and data.

Minimum Qualifications

Ordinary Diploma in Science Technology (Biology)

Minimum of four years’ relevant working experience gained from a reputable institution.

Key Competencies

  • Knowledge on common fishes in Uganda.
  • Must be computer literate.
  • Must have knowledge on data analysis and use of Statistical tools.
  • Ability to work for many days on water under minimum supervision.
  • Commitment and patience during work.
  • Demonstrated ability in the use of appropriate software including Ms Office.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to undertake field based data collection for extended periods of time.
