Position Title: Fish Biology Technician
Department: Fish Biology
Reporting to: Head Fish Biology
Location: Jinja
Salary Scale: UR6
Overall Purpose
Provide technical support to research scientists undertaking research on fish biology and ecology, develop and maintain databases for both aquaculture and capture fisheries research.
Terms of Reference
- Prepare work plans for field sampling activities and data collection on the Biology and Ecology species including haplochromines.
- Prepare equipment for field sampling and data collection.
- Use existing identification keys and other emerging techniques to identify major fish taxa.
- Generate data on the biological and ecological parameters of key fish species.
- Collect and preserve fish part samples for further analysis.
- Analyse collected samples/data and produce preliminary results/reports.
- Participate in Agricultural Research Review/Planning and dissemination events.
- Organize and maintain laboratory equipment and data.
Minimum Qualifications
Ordinary Diploma in Science Technology (Biology)
Minimum of four years’ relevant working experience gained from a reputable institution.
Key Competencies
- Knowledge on common fishes in Uganda.
- Must be computer literate.
- Must have knowledge on data analysis and use of Statistical tools.
- Ability to work for many days on water under minimum supervision.
- Commitment and patience during work.
- Demonstrated ability in the use of appropriate software including Ms Office.
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to undertake field based data collection for extended periods of time.
