Water Environment.

This discipline is concerned with the environment where the Fish habitats. It is sub divided into three areas that is limnology for water quality, invertebrates which are both micro invertebrates (Zooplanktons) and macro invertebrates like insect and phytoplankton (algae).

Fish biology.

This discipline is sub divided into four areas that is fish biology and ecology which study the fish habitations, fisheries taxonomy concerned with the fish types, fish genetics which studies fish genes and fish stock assessment which deals in the quantity of fish available in the water.

Socio-economics.

This section deals with the socio economic aspects of the fishery and its impacts on the economy and livelihoods.

Marine section.

This section deals with marine engineering. It designs, develops and coordinates maintenance and repair of marine machinery and related equipment, marine mechanical under general supervision interprets blue prints, sketches or verbal

 Financial Section

deals in coordinating and compiling the institute's annual financial budget. It also prepares monthly and annual statutory accounting reports.

Information and Data centre.

It is the heart of the institute responsible for all the institute information. It receives abroad range of print and electronic information resources such as books, periodicals, journals, films and video collections for the institute. It also deals with keeping information both current and old information materials, dissemination and co-ordinate outreach activities

Systems Administration.

This is responsible for coordinating the implementation effective data communication networks in order to ensure efficient transfer of data and information from work stations to the central computer database. It's also responsible for coordinating the installation of both local and wide area networks to ensure the network is available to all system users in the institute.

Procurement Section.

This deals in coordinating the development of the institute's annual procurement plan and budget for purchasing capital equipment goods and services according to the approved procurement policy and procedure guidelines. This also monitors and tracks the market prices for costs of materials, goods and services in order to control expenditure and ensure efficient use of Organisational resources.

Human Resource and Administration

It co-ordinates and plans for human resource activities of the institute such as the recruitment and selection performance and management, training, development, payment, promotion and benefits as well as the employee relations. He is also in charge of conducting job orientation, investigation and resolving employee grievances as well as implementation of human resource plan and strategies.
