View R. L. Welcome. The biological effects of climatic Chanoes on some fishes in the Lake Victoria. A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of philosophy at Makerere University College. University of East Africa. Anonymous. Anonymous. 1966. Some effects of climatic change on the biology of fish inhabiting a small stream and a series of lagoons are considered.Rainfall is the principal climatic variable , and the stream undergoes a sequence of floods and droughts corresponding to seasonal changes in intensity.less annual fluctuation is shown by the lagoons which have arisen from longer term variations in rainfall.Characteristic species of fish are found each in habitat. In the stream thses are mainly migratory and appear only at times of spate but in lagoons more permanent populations exist. The number of species inhabiting any lagoon and the size and maturation length of individual fish, are proportional to the degree of isolation.
View The andromous fish breed only during the rains and experiments indicate that the later stages of ripening take place during migration in the river.Adults are generally absent from the stream at other times but the young are found in the upstream swamps where they grow and later migrate to the lake at a size characteristic of each species.Inhabitants of the lagoon breed continuosly, but an increase in intensity occurs at least for one species during wet months.
View Little change in diet takes place when fish migrate and they generally feed throughout the breeding period. The condition factor of fish from the river alters at the length at which juveniles move to the adult habitat;there is no such alteration in the lagoon fish
View The principal biolgical effect of short term climatic change is the migration and brreding of anadromous fish during spate. The longer term climatic changes have created new environment which have stimulated the increase of the introduced species Tilapia leucosticta. Populations in this species and Haplochromic nubilus show stunting which is related to the degree of isolation of the lagoon from the lake. FIRRI LIBRARY. PHD. PHD 551.5(676)WEL.
