This paper deals with zooplanktivorous species which, except for one species (H."reginus"),show a large overlao in gross morphological characteristics, competition for food or space is likely to occur anywhere in this flock,it is between such species, unless ecological isolation has been achieved.Strong evidence has been found that the species are indeed ecologically segregated and therefore possibly sufficiently isolated to exist. |

Within the Mwanza gulf, horizontal distributions of eight and vertical distributions of seven zooplanktivorous species were compared.Species were not randomly distributed over the sampling area, but restricted to certain horizaontal and/or vertical zones.Species which segregated relatively little horizontally'did so vertically,and/or by differrent diets. The two species with the largest diet overlap segregated vertically.Species pairs segregated along at least one niche axis.A detailed study of vertical distributions did not yield any evidence for interactive competition for space. Results of a study on the role of competition for food will be published in a forthcoming paper. |

Vertical distributions of fish and food at a 14 m deep station (G) correlated well by night. After sunset,H.heusinkveldi and H.pyrrhocephalus made an upward migration similar to that of their main prey,Chaoborus larvae and pupae.By day ,the concordance of fish and food distributions was clear for h.pyrrhocephalus and H.heusinkveldi, but not for H."argens".
